Visually, this film has hardly any equal, and for me that more than compensates for the unclear morality, the religious and messianic elements (the sermon on the Tower of Babel, the role of the Mediator, the "let the children come to me" ending) and the theatrical acting of the loving couple that far exceeds the boundaries of the decent. (With regard to the latter, it can still be argued for Brigitte Helm in defense that her portrayal as Mary should resemble a frightened deer with clenched knuckles as much as possible in order to maximize the contrast with the extroverted and rousing "Maschinenmensch", but the way in which Gustav Fröhlich as Freder always grabs his heart must have already been looked at with frowning eyebrows in 1927.)

In the end, it's the gigantic sets (both above and below the Earth's surface), the mass scenes of, say, the workers rushing in and out like zombies, and the still-impressive explosions and electricity and water FX that give this film its deserved reputation as have delivered one of the most iconic productions ever, and the number of films implicitly or explicitly indebted to Metropolis will be beyond counting. Another beautiful score by Gottfried Huppertz, and Fritz Rasp is wonderfully creepy as "Der Schmale" (the man who has to shadow Freder). An lavish and megalomaniac building on a cheap foundation of immature socialist ideas, but thanks to the expertise of the master builder I can easily concentrate on the architecture as a feast for the eyes. As the New Yorker said of this film in 1978, "It goes too far and always gets away with it."

Film about class difference in society and also about the many idiosyncrasies in people.

In conclusion, the heart is the moderator between the brain and the hands.

Undoubtedly a masterpiece for its time. The expressionist mass scenes look hallucinatory and not just those. The image of the underground man and the power from above form an uncomfortably futuristic image. They are visual highlights that strongly underline the structure of the film.
