Dans Ma Peau plot

"Some truths cut deep."

Successful businesswoman Esther suffers a serious leg injury from a fall in the backyard at a party with lots of wine. The strange thing is that she shuts out the pain and only notices it later. Her boyfriend is worried and scared because why didn't she feel the pain right after the fall? Esther becomes increasingly fascinated by the mutilation of her body. This is partly because her boyfriend's concern only puts her off. It is a good motivation for her to continue experimenting.

May there be.

Indeed, it reminded me a bit of Trouble Every Day, but Cronenberg's body horror was also not far away. Yet unfortunately a few small things go wrong.

The film is a mix between the dark/sick French wave and a French talk film. The latter ensures that the other scenes gain strength, but it also makes for some more boring interludes. The character of the Van is not developed strongly enough in the dramatic interludes, so the effect is somewhat missed.

But otherwise seriously creepy. the Van is just a sick woman (in this film), I can't use many more words to describe it. It produces some dirty and impressive scenes. Therefore, not extremely or ridiculously gross, just insanely effective. The last 45 minutes of the film are indeed somewhat better, but the film still falls back into its cycle of inferior intermediate segments.

Very unfortunate, because otherwise a unique and strong film. It is certainly impressive, staring at the image in horror at times, but it is mainly those individual scenes that stand out. As a whole it's just not good enough. Nice work by the Van, both in front of and behind the camera.

3.5*

Strong.

Somewhat striking combination of drama and horror, indeed somewhat comparable to Trouble Every Day, where horror only takes over in later phases. The Van's character could have been explored better, since the drama takes up a fair portion of the film, but her acting itself is nothing short of great. Often reminiscent of Beatrice Dalle, not only her appearance, but also her facial expressions and mannerisms are somewhat similar.

I don't think the self-mutilation scenes need any lengthy explanation; they are repulsive in their simplicity. Not extremely raunchy or explicit, but extremely effective and simply sickening. These repulsive scenes are, above all, what Dans Ma Peau thrives on. Visually, the film is also often strong, although the soundtrack lacks some punch that might have given the film extra strength during the climax.

But a very effective film from - and how could it be otherwise - French soil. A few minor flaws perhaps, but the shocking, impressive moments in the film easily compensate for them. 3.5*.

A unique French horror film that fits seamlessly with the New French Extremity movement, which mainly emerged in the 2000s. The film therefore feels almost solely as a shock device, since director Marina de Van does not do much with the drama surrounding it. Fortunately, Dans Ma Peau does have a certain (French) charm and De Van himself acts exceptionally well, but all in all that is not enough to make the situation in which the main character finds himself feel somewhat emotional. This is mainly due to the fact that De Van as a figure is simply not very interesting, which means that the film regularly falls into uninteresting discussions. The direction has a nice raw and appropriate tone and the number of unsavory things is quite high. I assume that the enthusiast also watches a film like this for that. It is precisely because of this that it is unfortunate that the whole thing is also very interested in creating a background and that is where things go wrong. For me personally, it completely hinders a quite skillfully directed film.
