This was much more entertaining than expected. I have the eureka box, so on to part 2 and the documentary, but I understand that someone wants to piggyback on this. it is for a broad audience but still kind of idiosyncratic. The fx are just really cool. Cheesy, but cool. I found the plot very childishly adventurous in a fun way. The potter family is a funny bunch and the other residents of the apartment are well cast and not too emphatic characters. At least, they don't take too much screen time for that, which I like. The speed is also nice. Something that can sometimes ruin the viewing pleasure of these types of films. Actually, I can't say much negative about it. Sure, it won't win an originality award and the budget is low, but within that I think it's all well and playfully developed. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but it doesn't become an embarrassing pile of failed jokes either. Now on to the movie that made everything with the word troll in it lose value: troll 2!

Strangely missed it in the '80s, even though I devoured most Vestron titles at the time. Perhaps this was because the trailer for the film already looked very crappy at the time. In any case, the film has stood the test of time very poorly, we can safely say that. It all looks really bad and the script has no chance. Sporadically the film briefly comes to life, especially when dwarf Phil Fondacaro appears in his role as Professor Malcolm. Those scenes are strikingly sincere. The rest of the film is poorly made garbage, bland and cringe-inducingly corny. By the way, I had to laugh when Michael Moriarty introduced himself to his new neighbors: "My name is Harry Potter".

Director John Carl Buechler tries to work as imaginatively as possible with obvious budget limitations and the design is not bad at all. The building that slowly turns into a troll forest is funny and there are certainly striking scenes to spot in between, but nevertheless it is all depicted in a rather bland manner. The horror is more or less pushed to the back corner and the acting is horribly bad, and the makers fail to develop a stable atmosphere. After the first fifteen minutes had passed, boredom struck me and unfortunately Buechler creates too little to continue to demand your attention. As a result, the film mainly remains in the category of "occasionally a nice idea, but mainly very uninteresting".
