Marlon Brando is at the top of his game in this complex tale that tries to reveal the mood in the US since the assassination of JFK in a fascinating way. The film is extra interesting because Jane Fonda shows herself here, after western comedy Cat Ballou, in a dramatic role and because Robert Redford and Robert Duvall play one of their first film roles here.

Redford plays Charlie "Bubbles" Reeves, a convicted felon whose escape sends a town into a frenzy. Sheriff Calder [Marlon Brando] is not only trying to keep things under control, but is also trying to keep his feet on the ground under pressure from influential "friends" who pressure him to take a hard line on Bubbles, even threatening to personally lynch him. Others have reason to suspect that Bubbles is taking revenge on them and feel that Calder is doing too little to protect the town.

Director Arthur Penn was furious when producer Sam Spiegel re-edited the film and was very displeased with the final result. The film probably contains too many characters, which makes the pace in the first part a bit slow because of the many dialogues. But the performances are excellent and the film works very effectively towards a very strong finale, which shows very clear parallels with the American history of the 1960s, but is therefore so fascinating. Brando towers above everything and everyone and ensures that the film never loses track despite the many characters. A must for fans of Brando, a must for lovers of films with a recent historical context. Absolutely fascinating!

Very bad. The film takes forever to get going and immediately goes off the rails as soon as it finally picks up the pace. There are at least five or six long scenes that are of no importance to the plot. Incidentally, the plot is very thin. The love triangle at the heart of the story remains extremely superficial, on the level of a soap opera. Themes such as adultery, racism and the animal instincts of man are touched upon, but never really dealt with. Incidentally, it is also incredible that all those big stars keep a straight face during the often idiotically wooden dialogues. With the last sentence of the film perhaps as the low point.

The impressive cast makes this somewhat worthwhile, but it must be said that the film has not stood the test of time very well. The much too long drawn out story is very static and conservatively portrayed by director Arthur Penn. The way the theme of racism is dealt with is also quite cringe-worthy. You keep watching for the familiar names, and there are quite a few, but in the end this is a rather mediocre film.
