A television film that was very well received at the time and even earned Jenny Agutter an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress, but which has since, in a curious way, gone out of print. I cannot find a clear explanation for exactly why this is on the internet, but I read somewhere that Paul Gallico had stipulated that this film should not be released commercially after the original broadcast, which is all the more remarkable because Gallico is not only the author of the original short story (published in 1941) but also wrote the film script himself, and therefore had every reason to be satisfied with the film. Or did he perhaps have a nobler motive and did not want this favorite project to be exploited any further?
In any case, fortunately, a copy of this film can currently be found on YouTube. Unfortunately, the quality is certainly nothing to write home about: the story is easy to follow, it is clear how good the performances of Richard Harris and Jenny Agutter are, and the trainer of the snow goose from the title deserves all praise, but the colors are so washed out that it almost looks as if this film was digitized from an old VHS recording, so that you can only get a vague impression of how beautiful the nature shots must have originally been. It is to be hoped that this television film will one day receive a better release, because alongside my cherished memories of the original short story (fortunately still easy to find) and Camel's concept album from 1975, I would love to see The snow goose on screen in all its glory.
