"The Year's Most Exciting Team of Screen Lovers!"
Story about the love affair between Emma Lady Hamilton and Lord Horatio Nelson in 1786. The story begins when young Emma marries the British envoy in Naples, Sir William Hamilton. When Lord Nelson arrives at court to assist the king in the war against Napoleon, he and Emma fall in love. Even though they are both married, they decide to live together, but when the war goes wrong, Lord Nelson decides to take charge of the armed forces himself.

Great film, my favorite for years too, which I still take off the shelf with some regularity. I know the history of their romance well as the administrator of a website about Lord Nelson, and this film touches very closely on the truth, although it does end very abruptly.

Vivien Leigh was not only strikingly beautiful as Scarlett, but she also shows her best side as Lady Hamilton.
Moreover, she incorporates quite a few emotional variations into her performance with great ease in this film, which strikes a balance between romance and warfare, and yet uses the latter to recall some historical facts.

Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier were the most glamorous British couple of their time. This historical drama was their third collaboration on the big screen. The true history is reasonably respected, although melodramatic and politically charged elements have been added.
Emma Hamilton was the daughter of a poor blacksmith in Cheshire. She worked her way up from maid and dancer to ambassador's wife and mistress of an admiral. Vivien Leigh switches smoothly back and forth between a broad and a refined accent. Horatio Nelson was disfigured in one eye, but in reality wore no eyepatch. He is primarily remembered as a tragic war hero, but with this ménage à trois he was also involved in a scandal that caused a stir. Mr. Hamilton was surprisingly tolerant as a cuckold.
Director Alexander Korda and cinematographer Rudolph Maté were both born in Austria-Hungary, but they worked in Hollywood. They used clever chiaroscuro effects. Sometimes part of Vivien Leigh's face is brightly lit, while a shadow falls on another part. This symbolizes the dark side of the seductress Emma Hamilton. For profile shots, she wore makeup on only one half of her face. She is adorned in silk, brocade, and jewels, and is surrounded by chandeliers and a four-poster bed.
