Detroit 9000 plot

"It's the murder capital of the world. And the biggest black rip-off of the decade."

Lieutenant Danny Bassett is a dedicated police officer who also has to babysit his ailing wife after hours. In his meager spare time he likes to go to a brothel, and one evening he accidentally learns that some mobsters are planning to rob a jewelry store. Together with his partner, he decides to catch the thieves, but it turns out not to be so easy to catch the trigger-happy criminals.

Racist statements and stereotypes are rampant. I am used to racism and grew up in a time where words like niggers, soot jokes and pale farts did not shock me, but what is sometimes said here often goes one step further. Welcome to the blaxploitation genre... where skin color does matter. A white and black cop investigate a heist during a fundraising party for a local gubernatorial candidate. The 10-minute action scene at the end is perhaps the largest in the entire genre along with Shaft's Big Score! and actually looks good. With wonderful funk in the background. And a twist. Detroit 9000 also focuses on a solid story but does not quite succeed. The way the investigation is progressing seems clumsy. But as blaxploitation, this one is more than worth a watch.
