Belly of the Beast plot

"A father's rage knows no limit."

Unbeknownst to Jake Hopper (Steven Seagal), his daughter Jessica and her friend Sarah have been kidnapped while traveling through Southeast Asia. But when a friend from his Secret Service days gives him the ransom-demand tape, he realizes he must act on his own. Jake flies to Bangkok himself in the hope that he can save the girls with the help of his old network. His quest takes him deep into the Thai underworld. He follows the trail of the group suspected of Jessica's kidnapping. He ends up in the middle of a battle between a corrupt Thai general and the Abu Karaf, a gang of gun smugglers. As Jake tries to unravel the plot, he discovers that the CIA is being manipulated, and that his daughter is in the middle of the web.

I have deep respect for Steven Seagall. He has put together fantastic films, of which Under Siege is definitely one of my favorites. I recently bought a stack of his films because of the good old days (and because they only cost a dollar each), but I can understand why they cost practically nothing. Belly Of The Beast is a prime example in that regard. It is certainly not a bad film, but it earns its living by making the same films very often. In everything it lags behind the old work. You see that Steven is getting older and because you don't always see his face, I wonder if he still does his stunts himself at all. Belly Of The Beast belongs to the part of the oeuvre that is (unfortunately) superfluous.

Seagal

I don't like that guy at all, especially with Siu-Tung Ching. Not that he's such a great director now, but he's got plenty of entertaining action movies to his name, most of which I've seen by now.

Then it turns out again and again that they also have to make an "American" film, although it is not that bad here and we get Thailand as a nice background for this action film. Surprisingly, one of the highlights of the film, because otherwise it is not much.

Seagal seems to be playing a parody of a bad action hero, but fear it was something more serious than it looked. He has a ridiculous appearance, too bad that Siu-Tung Ching does not succeed in portraying him credibly as an action hero. It is separate from his abilities in real life, but on film you can hardly take him seriously. This is partly due to his clumsy stature, but what such a Sammo Hung has made his trademark of, that doesn't really work with Seagal.

The action scenes themselves were not too bad, the hand of Siu-Tung Ching is clearly visible in a number of moves, the editing is also clearly of his hand. Not that it is overly spectacular or even worth watching the entire film, but fortunately it does bring some life to the brewery.

Acting is subordinate in films like this one, Seagal (and the likes by the way, the entire cast is amazingly substandard) makes it too bright. Fortunately, Siu-Tung Ching manages to add a bit of fun, but it never comes close to a decent film.

1.5*

Seagal punches, dives and shoots in this almost John Woo-esque mayhem with wacky Wire Fu action. Chieftain Steven splits an arrow with a katana, flies through his enemies with a high dose of lead and beats up a fucking transsexual. I liked you much better as a bitch is by far the best Seagal quote ever. With a simple hand movement, countless Asian stuntmen fly through the air again. You should keep your fingers away from his daughter. And somewhere halfway through, he still kisses a Thai prostitute with dry lips. My hero.
