“A relationship, I think, is like a shark. you know? It has to constantly move forward or it dies. And I think what we got on our hands is a dead shark.”

With a Woody Allen film you never know for sure what to expect. After the wonderful Match Point and VCB, Midnight in Paris was a big disappointment. And unfortunately Annie Hall is not an unqualified success either. This may be called the mother of all romantic comedies, but I thought it all came across as very old-fashioned and dated. The voiceovers, the non-chronological narration and talking directly into the camera may have been fun gimmicks in 1977, it's been done a hundred times and better today ((500) Days of Summer and When Harry Met Sally are good examples ).

But the biggest problem is the interplay between Allen and Keaton. Nowhere is their love credible and why the tall and handsome Annie chooses a relationship with a neurotic, petite and death-obsessed Alvy is nowhere clear, and the chemistry also leaves much to be desired. Nice wish fulfillment on Allen's part but it is not credible. Annie Hall certainly has its funny sides in the first half hour, but after that it gets mostly tedious and long-winded. And yet you will always watch the next Woody Allen film, because sometimes there is a gem in between.

Yesterday in the category 'yes check, saw this classic again' made time for Annie Hall.

Much in this film is to love, especially for neurotic doubters like me. Recognizable, so, but also done creatively, with those various tricks, which show a filmmaker/leader who shows self-mockery despite the desire for depth, and does not dare to take the film too seriously. And while some moments are cringe-inducing (that box of cocaine), others are truly hilarious (Marshall McLuhan!). The beautiful, bittersweet ending also manages to hit the heart.

But then: that endless chatter! Sorry, I know it's really the cheapest charge you can make this movie, and from other comments here I get the impression that you really shouldn't complain about that, and that if you do, it's a sign that you've misunderstood Woody Allen, and that you should watch the film another dozen or so times, with textbooks on psychology handy.

But to be honest, after ten minutes that talk was already a bit of a pain to me, and considering the whole film I was bothered by it, yes.

I've still only been there a few times unfortunately, but I really love everything about New York. That also applies to the films Woody Allen made in and about the city. 'Annie Hall' was the first of these and is memorable for several reasons. It is the prototype (and seldom improved) for modern rom-coms in cinema and TV and has some nice cinematic finds, such as the physical split-screen and the breaking of the fourth wall, where the movie characters address the viewer directly. . There will also be a Disney-pastic animation, discussions with passers-by in the street and a scene where the thoughts of the characters are shown in subtitles. Still fresh after more than forty years.
