A fairytale story that is told as Dumas intended. With the necessary witty humor but above all a lot of adventure. Gene Kelly does not do badly and the other actors also act quite well. What is certainly noticeable are the fights and other action scenes that were very smooth for that time. Especially the choreographies are a feast for the eyes. If you notice how d'Artagnan jumps smoothly over a bar during a fight and then stands on the balcony in a jiffy. Without CGI though. This kind of sword film and classic certainly needs this style.

At times it is a bit long-winded and comes across as somewhat wooden, but fortunately the story stands up straight and the whole is very beautifully filmed. One of the better film adaptations of the well-known story.

Despite the star cast, a somewhat disappointing version of the classic story by Alexandre Dumas, with Gene Kelly's athleticism as its most striking aspect. In terms of (un)tension, the film falls short of the two-part French version from 1961 by Bernard Borderie with Gérard Barray in the role of D'Artganan and Mylène Demongeot as the most seductive Lady de Winter ever.

The three four musketeers in 2 hours and 5 minutes. Certainly entertaining but sometimes a bit long-winded with too many dialogues. Gene Kelly is actually quite flexible. More of a stage actor than an actor but he can do it. The film looks cinematically fantastic and that for that time. Wide shots on horses. An eye for detail such as those fantastic fencing fights on the coast. Eye-catchingly beautiful. By the way, those are also the ladies who have grown quite old. As far as I can see, the cast is all dead now.

Although made light sometimes also serious. I did not see the dramatic ending coming.

The whole thing is on a fantastic blu ray disc. With English subs. Sometimes difficult with all those expensive words but quite easy to follow.

Movie 3.5

Picture blu ray 4.5

Sound 4.0
