Michael Chamberlain (Sam Neill) is the pastor of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Together with his wife Linda (Meryl Streep) and their children, 4-year-old Aidan, 6-year-old Reagan and their very young baby Azaria, they go on holiday for a week. They camp near Ayer's Rock, an impressively large rock formation in Australia. One evening, Linda sees a dingo (wild Australian dog) emerge from their children's tent. Immediately afterwards she discovers that Azaria has disappeared without a trace, whereby she is convinced that the dingo has taken the baby. A massive search ensues.
