Disney Classic #8

The third installment in a row consisting of short films, and once again, the quality is quite variable. Some sketches barely stick, while others are reasonably entertaining. My positive highlights were the two hats, the wolf, and especially the jazz film. The latter is also completely different in style from what Disney has previously shown. In this way, it capitalized well on the rise of accessible jazz music.

Furthermore, it's now hard to imagine why this had to appear on the big screen. Why make a compilation of short films that have nothing in common and package it as a complete product? Luckily, these days there's DisneyToon to give such excesses the space they need. This will never, ever become a classic.

3*

Part 8 of the classics series is once again too much of the same. It's again just short films accompanied by the usual music, like we know from Fantasia, for example. Unfortunately, just like in that film, not all the films are enjoyable, and this rerun doesn't feel like a film you'd watch again just for fun.

A bit better than Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros.

Not quite the classic Disney classic we're used to, of course. And we know why they made these kinds of films back then. The animation quality varies quite a bit. Although we do get some beautiful and inventive animations here. A favorite is definitely the jazz interlude. A delightful style supported by a good soundtrack. But the bits with the crane and the singing whale are also very nice. The animation is quite good. Only the stories are a bit off. They're not all equally fun and/or interesting. The baseball bit is downright annoying.

Another small step in the right direction. Now let's hope we can maintain this trend until we reach the real classics again.
