Tourneur presented a very special, cleverly constructed version of the Faust story during the war years in occupied France.

It is a fantastic film starring an excellent Pierre Fresnay and consisting largely of a long flashback.

The filmmaker has certainly succeeded in evoking the right, unsettling atmosphere, without major shock effects or horror gimmicks.

Several striking scenes, such as the group of bewildered hotel guests, curious and anxious around the small table, the introduction to and account of the "masked predecessors," and certainly the intense encounters with the little black man.

Great work.

Partly due to the year in which it was made, a remarkable historical document.
The story is almost a fairy tale about a man who buys a hand stolen from a monk by the devil from the now sixth or seventh owner.
In the beginning, the hand brings him success in his profession (painter), but at some point, he finds out through the "trickster" that he sold his soul by accepting the hand.
An interesting and reasonably original idea for its time. Due to the almost fairytale-like way the story is told and the bombastic soundtrack, it doesn't really feel like a horror film. That is not to say that this is a bad movie. Although the film suffers somewhat from being dated, I must honestly say that it is still quite entertaining.
Additionally, the short running time ensures that the story develops quite quickly. The ending was a bit predictable, though, but I do forgive the filmmakers for that.
A French film that is actually quite atmospheric, but don't expect real horror.
