Strange combination of comedy, social commentary on bureaucracy, drama, and It's a Wonderful Life-esque magical realism. I thought the whole thing worked, although Bergman almost went off the rails during the courtroom scene. A very small (benefit of the doubt) 4 stars. Somewhat underrated and, not entirely deservedly, a forgotten Bergman, even though he has made dozens of better films.

Ingmar Bergman is the kind of person you can't imagine was ever young, but here is the proof. It is the story of two young people who fall head over heels in love and want to start a new life together. However, they do not conform to the norms and values of society. They clash with bureaucracy and Protestant morality.
It is a successful blend of social realism, romance, and humor. A narrator breaks the fourth wall to link the scenes together. A youthful indiscretion is that the music sometimes announces when something sad is about to happen. Rain has a symbolic meaning. Opposite Birger Malmsten’s somber stare stands Barbro Kollberg’s radiant smile.
