Strikingly different from the crime film noir you normally see from this period, more realism but at the same time also a lot duller, partly because little of note happens beyond the police investigation.
Actually, this is a rather dry enumeration of a police investigation following a murder among criminals. Furthermore, it is striking how black and white the dynamics are: the cops are the good guys all the way and the bad guys are the bad guys, without any depth or even character or charisma, to such an extent that they are super boring. A bad guy of the James Cagney or Jack Palance type is sorely missed.
