Soulful atmosphere and tension-free tinkering, which is also completely ruined by the terribly bad acting. In the last 10 minutes you will see a few metamorphoses, if you haven't dozed off yet.

After Stirba - Werewolf Bitch and The Marsupials people probably thought; perhaps we should return to the source. And so the fourth Howling became a kind of semi-remake and apparently even more faithful to the book than Joe Dante's original. So a woman with a burnout goes into a deserted area to recover, but crying and nightmares keep her from really resting. Sounds like The Howling indeed. But unlike The Howling IV: The Original Nightmare, the original was made by people who know what they are doing. People who know how to build a little tension, who know how to make a low budget work to your advantage and who know how to entertain an audience.

There is no doubt that Howling 4 is a crappy film, but it is also extremely dull and therefore not even remotely entertaining. Especially in the latter area, the people behind Howling 4 received a big failing grade. Because yes, The Howling 3 was also a stupid pulp film, but it was still largely entertaining. Howling 4 is mainly extremely boring. The tension comes from a random vision with a nun, an old couple or a werewolf that remains off-screen and we also follow several characters during their research in a lot of poorly edited sequences. The only somewhat memorable moment is the moment when that guy in jeans and with that soap opera face - and it turns out he did indeed appear in Days of our Lives - suddenly starts to melt. We are then in the last few minutes of the film and it seems like an attempt to wake up the audience again. But Howling IV: The Original Nightmare is not really worth waking up for.

1.5 stars.

Gary Brandner (the writer of the original book material) appeared not to be entirely satisfied with the first film due to its lack of similarities. Director John Hough was then given the task of realizing a project that was closer to the source material, but it mainly resulted in a copy that felt a bit cheaper. This time we are in South Africa, so you can expect beautiful landscapes and nice night shots. To a certain extent, this enhances the atmosphere quite nicely, but when it comes to tension, things don't exactly run smoothly. This is partly due to the particularly poor acting, because many of the members stand there as if they had to read a text board with too small print. The special effects don't match Joe Dante's efforts, but it looks nice and exudes an entertaining 80s atmosphere. Hough does not regard this as his own film due to the constant interference of screenwriter Clive Turner. Later, Turner would make the lives of the other series directors equally miserable because of conflicting visions.
