Departing from a botched job, Kenny, brother Dave and Sylvie's ways part. One contemplates in prison while the other two start a relationship, notably his brother's former lover. The smallest child knows that this cannot end well. It is therefore a long wait before this "secret" is made known to the easily (?) flammable Kenny. Bit of a cliché story, but the execution is quite OK.

The bleakness of the characters' milieu was very apparent. There was also an always oppressive air of mistrust and tension, as if it could explode at any moment. The hopelessness of getting life on the right track and the right path through dull jobs was strongly present. The gabber duo appears to be closely related at first, but differs greatly. Kenny, the impulsive manipulative macho versus the somewhat compliant well-meaning tame brother who can rarely stand up for himself. Things get even better when Dave becomes an accomplice and is once again drawn into his past and blackmailed with it by his brother. In addition, attention is paid to the break that Sylvie and Dave have entered into with their past: drug addiction, a boring life, ... Kenny, on the other hand, wants everything to stay the same and can hardly appreciate this.

The ending is indeed surprising and adds extra value to the film. I won't touch it, but I wasn't really thinking about it either. Those ostriches may have been a bit redundant, but the chopper provides a nice flashback to Fargo. I also noticed the good acting performances of Janssens, Perceval, Veerle Baetens, Bijvoet and Van den Begin. Decent Flemish film, not top notch, but just OK.

Another strong film from our southern neighbors. It is already clear to me that the Belgians can make raw films.

Robbery, one brother escapes, the other ends up in prison, then is released again, two opposites... That already sounds familiar.

The effect is surprising again, and especially the gray and cold atmosphere helps. The complex Kenneth is released after a botched robbery he committed with his brother Dave. Dave tries to forget about it, but Kenneth, on the other hand, seems to have a lot going on and it slowly becomes clear that his incarceration has not brought much success. Especially when he comes up with a corpse one day. Yes, we say one last job, but with a little nostalgia in the background: The Ardennes... That memories of their childhood should be released.

And so the film continuously manages to lead the viewer on the wrong track and we mainly focus on the fact how Kenneth, and afterwards also Dave, go to the extreme. The subtle references to Kenneth's youth are also very strong and perhaps a little recognizable somewhere. I didn't see the twist coming and reminded me of Se7en.

In addition, many other elements are also not misplaced: That the brothers clearly ogle at the gabber scene, that scene in the nightclub, or those absurd hermits in the woods... adding those horror moments... As far as I'm concerned, this is just another film where, again, the Dutch can suck their money with their many botoxed tetterwijven, automatic pilots and history libraries of drama films.

4.5*

I found the first hour to be mediocre, especially all very obvious, both narratively and stylistically. That group discussion is, for example, low-hanging fruit of not too fresh quality. The main character doesn't interest me at all. A slacker who destroys everything in his environment, which you see coming from minute three, we know that by now, don't we? The last half hour gave the film some momentum. This might have worked as one of the parts in a film like Relatos Salvajes, but for a full-length feature, Pront's print is rather poor.
