The Five Senses plot

"Nothing can cure the soul but the senses. — Oscar Wilde"

Feeling, looking, smelling, tasting, hearing: the five senses. They play an important role in this film, which focuses on five characters who long for an intimate relationship. Feel: Ruth is a masseuse. After the death of her husband, she became estranged from herself and from her daughter Rachel. Watch: Rachel is a teenage girl who spies on desirous making love. In doing so, she loses sight of the child she had to babysit. Smelling: Robert works as an interior decorator. He is looking for the true Jacob, guided by his sense of smell. To taste: Rona sells beautifully decorated cakes, but they don't taste like anything. Her Italian friend Roberto tries to give her some taste with delicious snacks. Hearing: Richard has been told that he will soon be deaf. The encounter with a woman makes him discover that hearing can also be feeling.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! Love stories captured from real life. Beautifully developed characters, beautifully intertwined storylines, this film is pure enjoyment. The ending, where Roberto sits amidst the candles waiting for Rona, is an emotional highlight. 4.5*

A beautiful film about the relationship between emotions and perception. The five characters, each with their own "sense," are original and amusingly found. The characters are all emotionally closed off and averse to "normal" communication channels (also known as chatter ), but each uses one of their senses to an extreme extent to connect with the outside world (and that contact usually remains one-way, further closing them off). In a way, these people strongly remind me of François Ozon's characters, which perhaps also explains why it's hard to empathize, which is always the case with him . This theme runs throughout the film (sometimes more, sometimes less) and I found it extremely captivating. Besides that, it's also simply an enjoyable film with good and often funny dialogue, a certain tension, and many human situations. It fits in with many solid, contemporary films from Italy or Spain, but it distinguishes itself through its original theme and believability (it never becomes a freak show, although it's sometimes close). Recommended, 4 stars.
