Les Triplettes de Belleville plot
Champion is a lonely boy who lives with his grandmother, Madame Souza. When she discovers that cycling is his great passion, she sets up a rigorous training plan for him to make him a real champion. As a participant in the Tour de France, he is kidnapped by mysterious men in black suits. Madame Souza and her dog Bruno go in search of Champion. The journey takes her to the mega-city of Belleville. Here she receives unexpected help from the Triplettes, three eccentric ladies who once formed a famous singing trio.

Very nicely made. Unique characters and a creative story. I found the events a little hard to follow at times, and it took me a while to get into it. The further the film progressed, the more impressed I became. I like the music, and I like that there isn't much talking in the film. That fits. I got a nostalgic feeling about it. Very good! 4*

Crazy but at the same time charming animation film, full of surrealistic and dryly comical situations. Reminds a bit of the early work of director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, especially Delicatessen. The animation style and use of color are beautiful and the film is a feast for the eyes. The absence of dialogue doesn't really bother me either. The plot is not very interesting and here and there the film may be a bit too strange, but all in all this is quite a unique viewing experience.

Monday afternoon, I stretched out on the couch for a bit to relax with a few movies, and the first one that came on was Les Triplettes de Belleville. I'm not really into animation; I often take issue with the packaging in that sense, as was the case with Top 250 hits like Mononoke-Hime, Tonari no Totoro, or Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, where this sometimes even led to discussions about the content. Well, I just don't care for that, but there are definitely exceptions, like Grave of the Firefly's, and in that regard, this film turned out to be quite a story in itself.
Unique and absurd, the whole thing begins with a performance that later turns out to be a TV broadcast; it is primarily the introduction to the Triplettes that is important at that moment, after which we quickly switch to Grandma and Champion, where cycling also soon comes into play and training begins with things yet to come, including the kidnapping and rescue attempt of Grandma. That is the story in short—well, story...? Actually, it isn't even that much; it is quite simple in that regard, and it is also actually 'stupid' where the dog has the most say.
But that is actually not what Les Triplettes is really about; the animation, amidst crude faces, absurd body parts, clownish situations, expressive sets, and other peculiar things like Champion's massage or Grandma's wheel straightening, still manages to hold the attention quite well and carries a distinct appeal where absurdism and a form of nostalgia predominate.
Right, at a certain point it does take a bit of a while for it to become clear what Grandma and the triplets are actually going to do, but otherwise the whole thing continues to excel as an extremely well-made whole that conveys a peculiar feeling.
