"Elvis Presley as a Roving, Restless, Reckless, ROUSTABOUT"
Restless singer Charlie Rogers gets into trouble more often than he likes because of his rebellious behavior. On his way to a new challenge, his motorcycle is involved in an accident caused by troublesome fairground manager Joe Lean. Maggie Morgan, owner of the troubled fairground, offers him shelter while waiting for his motorcycle to be repaired. Charlie takes a temporary job as a 'roustabout' (a jack of all trades), much to Joe's dismay.

Elvis with girl at the fair.
There is little to enjoy between the songs, but as an Elvis vehicle this cannot be called bad in the least. And for non-fans, this is also suitable to pass the time as light and musical entertainment. The songs are good. There's not much else to it.
There are only a handful of good films with Elvis:
- King Creole
- Love Me Tender
- Charro
- Flaming Star
- Jailhouse Rock
The other 25 films are neither good nor less, and are shot at a breakneck pace with an often unmotivated and/or stoned Pelvis. Thanks to the idiotic film stranglehold contract in which his manager certainly did not support him. This even put pressure on Elvis to continue to comply and to accept the ridiculous scripts.
Fortunately, The King was able to live the last 8 years of his life "freely". The film contract expired in 1969.

Meanwhile, Elvis's 16th film and Hall Wallis's 7th. It is his last role in which he is serious, but it is not easy to take the film seriously. His character is a tough guy, but the combination with the problems at the carnival made me laugh. And especially when an icon like Barbara Stanwyck fills the role of carnival director. It is inevitable that Elvis fulfills the ultimate Colonel Parker fantasy here with the whole carnival thing.
The songs are entertaining enough and performed by the top musicians of the time. The costuming is in the hands of the legendary Edith Head, so people - the colonel - were even less scrupulous at this stage than afterwards. It is directed by John Rich - in his debut on a film set after a career in TV. But he certainly doesn't do a bad job, assisted by the experienced DoP Lucien Ballard (who previously worked with the greats of Hollywood).
Times are changing - around the mid-60s - and for the first time in an Elvis movie the word 'sex' is mentioned. Twice in the meaning of 'sex maniac', so negative.
All in all, quite entertaining because of the production values and casting. Guarantees an evening at camp.
