Choyonghan Kajok plot

"The ruthless comedy."

A family moves to the mountains where they convert a remote building into an inn. When the first guest mysteriously dies, some family members bury the remains because they don't want to miss out on customers because of the incident. Unfortunately, more and more people are dying at the inn and burying corpses is becoming the rule rather than the exception for the family.

Miike's semi-remake has much nicer discoveries, but at times the film is simply too mediocre for words.

This "Quiet Family" by Mr. Ji-woon Kim is a bit more consistent. The atmosphere is pleasant and there are a few hilarious moments.

Reasonable, 3.0*

Nice black comedy.

But it's difficult to fully enjoy this film if you've first seen Miike's adaptation. Although the plot is more or less the same, Katakuri's is such a juicy mix of all kinds of craziness that this film quickly feels a bit boring.

This one is more consistent, so if you like that you might like The Quiet Family a little better. Visually a bit neater, the humor is a bit more defined and given more space to create a consistent atmosphere. The acting is traditionally noisy, something I generally don't appreciate with Koreans.

Music choice is also terrible. Furthermore, this film flows along nicely, Jee-woon's talent is already visible, but after 100 minutes I can hardly conclude that it is all a bit tame. It might have been slightly different if I had seen this first, but it wouldn't have made more than half a difference.

Not annoying, but I'll stick with musical and stop-motion and sumo wrestlers and such.

3.0*

A remote hotel in the mountains. A strange family that runs the hotel. A lot of corpses. These are the ingredients that director J-Woon Kim uses for a comedy full of black humor. A idiosyncratic macabre story that provides exceptionally fun and fresh entertainment, although the film loses some of its spirit at the end.

The perspective lies with Mi-Na, the youngest daughter of the family. She views the extraordinary events that occur in the film in a way that exhibits great indifference and sarcasm. It's quite nice how the film develops into a morbid comedy with a steadily increasing corpse problem and Mi-Na's passive commentary. A comedy that is especially fun for the first 45 minutes. After that, the film becomes a bit repetitive, the number of meaningless characters increases and events are drawn out for too long. The humor is less effective and the content on offer is a lot less sparkling.

The characters that make up the family are okay. However, there is no real involvement with the family and the bizarre events. The characters evolve too little for this and the events are too contemplative in tone. If during the course of the film the absurd story loses some of its freshness, the film has nothing to fall back on. The apotheosis is disappointing. No memorable highlight, but an insignificant and not very humorous final chord drags the film to its end. It's a shame about the poorer second half, but I still saw an entertaining film.
