Any Way the Wind Blows plot
Antwerp, early June. On a sweltering Friday, eight people dream of a different life. There is wind and music, police and paranoia, gossip and arguing. There's an ancient virus, a lost Frisbee, a dead horse, and, wandering the city, an enigmatic phenomenon called Windman who feels everyone's pain but can't seem to help himself. In the evening a party awaits them...

Stay positive.
Such a film that I didn't know if I would still like it as much, but I was 100% satisfied with it. A good 10 years later still fresh and cheerful, with a series of fun characters who are each confronted with an excess of slightly wacky situations.
The best thing I actually like is that towards the end the film starts again a number of stories (which are actually more fascinating and grandiose than in the film itself), and just drops them when the film ends. Bit of a gamble because not everyone will like this, but it actually fits perfectly with this "summer day in Antwerp".
It remains an important film for the Flemish film world, but fortunately also one that is really enjoyable.

Awesome.
A film in which little happens, but at the same time so much. Anyone expecting a story will be disappointed. Any Way the Wind Blows is a sunny summer day in Antwerp, filmed in a wonderful way. Nothing more and nothing less.
Took me a while to really get into the movie, but once the characters started to feel familiar, the movie really got me. The characters themselves are also just great to follow. No over-polished, clean characters like in Magnolia, for example, but just a bit the average people that walk around in Antwerp. Much more fun to follow, and at times extremely comical. Especially that Windman was pure genius.
The highlight is without a doubt the scene at the party. Just enjoy the totally nonsensical, but super comical dialogues and situations. All this is supported by wonderful music, and nice camera work.
Undoubtedly the best Belgian film I've seen so far. Go ahead, 4.5*.

A sultry summer day in Antwerp. A character wakes up and looks out of his window over the city that - with all its inhabitants and their stories - will form the setting of this story. Bam! A Frisbee against his head is the starting signal for both the wonderful opening song by Magnus, and the narration itself. It sets the tone for the atmosphere of the sequel: a cross-section of a city on a random day, resulting in many casual encounters and insights.
It is not difficult to comprehend that a musician is at the helm here. Barman not only symbiotically interweaves his images with a beautiful, eclectic soundtrack; also his story full of small finds and diffuse plot with storylines (which arise as playfully as they disappear), give the film an elusive, lilting cadence.
Our characters also come together here and there, just enough to form a whole, but the way in which Barman lets them go just as easily will upset many a person. I prefer to see in it an accurate representation of life itself: seductive and aimless at the same time. Wonderful for those who dare to embrace it.
Life is music, and Bartender gets it. We may not always, but sometimes you shouldn't want that at all. Don't let it stop you from enjoying it. 5*
