Satudarah: One Blood plot

Satudarah, the motorcycle club frequently in the news for alleged criminal activities, is a secret world full of rituals and codes. 'Old-fashioned' ideals such as virility, brotherhood, loyalty, courage and spirituality are highly valued. The film shows how the new generation of leaders – Angelo, Olla, Mima and Bota – transform Satudarah from an unknown Dutch club into an international conglomerate within a few years. This development is not without problems.

In contrast to their previous documentary about the Hague Crips, the cinematic approach comes into its own much better. No longer do the protagonists look like rejected actors for a gangster film; instead, a particularly comprehensive picture is painted of the organizational structure of a major criminal organization. In doing so, it beautifully portrays the allure and tragedy of men who place themselves outside the law to be part of something bigger than themselves.

Incidentally, you don't get to see much crime. Aside from a violent reprimand of an expelled member and a tense meeting with the Bandidos, the presence of nefarious activities is merely insinuated. News footage and audio clips are supposed to show that, in reality, it is no cheerful motorcycle club. Somewhere, it feels like a cheap stylistic choice to mask the inability to actually show where this spiral of violence leads. But perhaps you cannot expect that from a documentary with a subject that is so difficult to access.

Strong documentary. It provides a good insight into this world, which is unknown to many. Of course, we don't see everything, but the documentary gives a decent picture and leaves a lot to the imagination. The men certainly show their toughest side and know when the camera is rolling. It is also nice that they film not only in the Netherlands but also in other parts of the world. It is not just a 'little motorcycle club', but a worldwide organization. 4.0
