Farmer David Harvey lives with his family on an isolated Ohio ranch during the pioneer days. After the death of his wife, he is left alone with his son Davey. Wanting to raise his son correctly, he decides to buy a maid, Rachel. Out of 'decency' he marries her, but it is purely a marriage of convenience. This changes when Jim, a family friend, pays a visit.
