Altman seems to be loosening the reins considerably after Short Cuts. In any case, the atmosphere here is a lot lighter; not to say more farcical.

But this is really quite tight. The camera tracks happily again, and one noisy, crowded sequence after another rolls out very smoothly.

The storylines vary in level and moments from 'witty' to 'too lame for words', but overall I actually enjoyed myself quite well.

Indeed, not Altman's best ensemble film. A warning sign perhaps, that the most striking feature is actually that an endless list of well-known actors participate.

But the nice thing is that they all visibly try their best, and Sophia Loren was not averse to performing her striptease fromIeri, Oggi, Domani for Mastroianni again 30 years later.

You might say: that will be embarrassing, but it is not that bad.

Chaos.

With the jumble of different storylines and the horde of actors, the question of what I thought of it is hardly answerable. Watching a film is like a game of who is who, and if you also have to remember the character, it becomes a bit much for me. Fortunately, there is hardly any story in it, and in the end it becomes more of a game of who you like or sympathize with.

Chiara Mastroianni wins that game in the end, and perhaps that is mainly because her character gets just a little bit more depth than the rest. But that too remains homeopathic.

Furthermore, I am honestly glad that this subgenre of the mosaic film has fallen out of fashion. Usually it doesn't work, all things considered - and I think that is also the case here. Of course, a positive word for the absurd images at the end, the models walking around aimlessly.
