Director Noel Black wasn't exactly a talented filmmaker. For this debut he used a penny novel about a derailed teenager who, at the side of an equally disturbed young man, develops into an unscrupulous criminal. It all sounds very exciting, but it isn't.
Antony Perkins in a role (which suits him well) and Tuesday Weld try to make something of it, but the story is too silly to give them a chance of success.

Comic thriller in which ex-convict Dennis Pitt [Anthony Perkins] starts working at a chemical company in the town of Winslow. Dennis has been released on parole from a psychiatric institution where he was held for a long time because he was held responsible for arson as a teenager. When he discovers that his new employer is dumping chemical waste on a large scale, he is determined to do something about it. When he meets the attractive Sue Ann [Tuesday Weld], he tells her he is a secret agent on a special mission. With this he hopes not only to impress her, but also to use her help in his mission. Sue Ann is completely involved in the plan, but the mission does not go entirely according to plan.

Perkins is in Psycho mode here and leaves you as a viewer unsure for a long time whether he is indeed acting out of moral outrage or whether he has more sinister motives. Weld gives excellent counterplay as the slightly over-enthusiastic assistant in a film that effectively combines comedy and thriller, resulting in a surprising but well-developed twist in the finale.

Perkins as an emotionally twisted person and Tuesday Weld as his very enthusiastic new girlfriend Sue Ann both play their roles with a double meaning. Or would it be different in this bad trip love drama where he would still act from moral values to report his new employer because he dumps chemical waste in the river and that both are really in love with each other? Well constructed story with strong roles and a satisfying twist towards the end. However, it won't be really exciting. 6/10
