I was already somewhat familiar with the story, but I finally saw the film. The film is quite beautifully done, and it wasn't surprising that it won an Oscar for cinematography and a nomination for art direction. The opening is well-done, though the characters are sometimes a bit too stiff, I must say. George Sanders mainly draws the attention, while the lead role is actually Hurd Hatfield (Dorian Gray). Although that's partly due to the role itself. Fortunately, Angela Lansbury, in supporting role, is a refreshing change.

Later, it becomes too erratic, but thankfully, that's all sorted out towards the end. The painting is a fine piece. Given the lack of special effects to achieve overwhelming ideas with the painting, the focus is on suggestion and the necessary shock moments. The music, especially Chopin, certainly adds to the atmosphere.

The film itself could have been a bit more lively, though I must admit that this actually adds a certain mystery and a dark edge. It's a film that stands out among the many film noirs currently available.

Long ago, during my high school years, I read Oscar Wilde's famous book. I remember almost nothing of it. Now that I've seen a film adaptation for the first time, I understand why: the plot doesn't appeal to me at all. The beginning about the blossoming love between Dorian and the singer Sybil is quite enjoyable, but from the moment he ruthlessly casts her aside, the story rapidly goes downhill.
The only highlight: the lovely song "Goodbye, Little Yellow Bird," beautifully sung by a lovely Angela Lansbury, who was still at the beginning of her career. My appreciation goes especially to her contribution to this film. Fans of Donna Reed can save themselves the trouble, as this beauty has nothing more than a cameo-like supporting role.

A spicy film with a clever script (Oscar Wilde!) which is expressed in the beautiful way in which George Sanders proclaims poisonously cynical views on marriage, women, men, society, etc.
Then the mystery unfolds in the story, in which at most one horror effect occurs.
Dorian remains outwardly very attractive but anger lurks within him and is rotting his soul, and is the decision that all who cause evil and pain will at least come to their senses through remorse and regret and punish themselves?
Well-cared for setting, the period well-drawn and with excellent performances in which the very young Angela Lansbury already stands out.
