Interesting story but weak execution; this is mainly due to the low acting level of most of the actors. The film is just barely worth watching because Guy Rolfe is one of the few who portrays his character with full conviction; without him, the film would most likely have been significantly worse.

William Castle tries to salvage the whole thing a bit with a nice cameo in which he addresses the viewer personally, but unfortunately, this is not one of his better film projects.

Thanks to Guy Rolfe, just barely an average of 2.5.

On the recommendation of alexspyforever, I also watched this somewhat lesser-known film by William Castle. I must say that I enjoyed it very much.

Mr. Sardonicus comes across well as a brutal, almost sadistic man who would do (or have done) anything to achieve his goal.

Furthermore, his wicked servant Krull also manages to provide quite a few entertaining scenes.

Mrs. Sardonicus is actually the least striking/interesting character in the entire story, and she comes across as somewhat superfluous here and there.

Finally, I would like to express my praise for Sardonicus's makeup, because even now he still comes across as freaky/creepy.

Funny ending too, with the cakemoo from Castle himself.

An entertaining horror film that has managed to stand the test of time quite well. Highly recommended for fans of old-school horror.

You get the feeling you are watching a film that looks 10 years older, and that is not meant negatively. In terms of atmosphere, cast, and cinematography, it is well done. Guy Rolfe as Baron Sardonicus still impresses with that gruesome smile. Audrey Dalton (the Baroness) and Erika Peters (the ex-wife) are the two beautiful ladies featured. The latter passed away this year at the age of 87 (1935–2022). Ronald Lewis, the scientist, is invited to help the Baron and in doing so meets his former lover, who has since become a Baroness. And that is precisely a strong asset for the Baron, who wants to cruelly pressure the scientist into helping him with illegal experiments. Oskar Homolka as Krull, who does everything for the Baron, is also a strong presence in the film. The story itself is somewhat disappointing given the fun concept, as the director tries to be original by letting the audience vote towards the end on how the ending should unfold. On top of that, the ending is very poorly developed. A bit of a shame. 6/10
