The first thing that strikes me about this film is that it only has 27 votes here on mm, admittedly I had not come across the film before I saw The Shining, this film appears briefly there 
Anyway, now about the film itself:
I thought the film started off strongly and because of a powerful but short voice over and of course the beautiful location where the film took place, I was almost immediately into the film.
The role of Dorothy is very well played by a very nice Jennifer O'Neill, she gives her character a lot of warmth and seems to be completely absorbed in her role.
Gary Grimes also acted well as an insecure teenager, the only one I found a bit out of place in this film was Oliver Conant as Benjie, he added virtually nothing to the whole and stood out quite a bit from the group.
Has anyone else noticed that you only hear Hermie's mother but never see it? her voice also seems to have been added later in the film, just look at the scene where Hermie is already far away from his house but still hears his mother talking clearly.
The ending of this film was also very nicely done and felt realistic.
I thought it was a shame that we only heard the voice over at the beginning and the end, but I think the voice over should have been featured more often.
In short: a beautiful heart-warming film that sometimes seems a bit slow, but for a film that is almost 40 years old, it has stood the test of time.

Beautiful coming-of-age drama during the Second World War, with a gripping ending. By telling the story in a subdued manner - without sensationalism or false sentiment - and the beautiful camera work, director Mulligan ensures that the wonder of Hermie (Gary Grimes) and the sadness of Dorothy (the beautiful Jennifer O'Neill) are convincingly conveyed. The difference in character between Hermie and his best friend Oscy (Jerry Houser) also comes into focus. Also beautiful music by Michel Legrand.

Today's youth would laugh at this movie... Times have changed. Mulligan's film, based on an autobiographical work, is more of a coming-of-age than a cheesy love film and the film benefits from it. The sexual awakening of some friends is presented with humor and romance. Hermie's first sexual experience with Dorothy is presented as leaving his childhood behind, and I can relate to that. The caterpillar becomes a butterfly. Those friends (Oscy and Benji) were a bit annoying, but luckily we saw them less and less. Beautiful dreamy camera work and the well-known music by Michel Legrand complete this beautifully. I thought the best scene was the one in the drug store when Hermie wants to buy condoms. but the silence in the last scene with Dorothy was also very captivating. Another forgotten classic, a bit dated but essential.
