Una Mujer Fantástica plot

"My name is Marina Vidal. Do you have any problem with that?"

Marina Vidal, a transsexual girl, is a waitress at a nightclub. She also performs as a singer where she works. She has a good relationship with her boyfriend, who is twenty years her senior. When one day he suddenly dies in her arms, she is deeply impressed. She faces discrimination and suspicion in modern and unforgiving Santiago. That makes her more vulnerable than before.

Very beautiful serene film about a transgender in the Chilean capital Santiago. Marina's world comes crashing down when the only one who accepts her as she is suddenly dies. What follows is a hostile world full of misunderstanding. The confrontations with her boyfriend's family are brutal and very hurtful. Sometimes subtle, but often also very open.

The film never loses itself in gratuitous sensation, on the contrary. Very nice role of Daniela Vega. Beautiful cinematography and fascinating story. Realistic print also where it is a step too far for many. A movie that I loved. Still highly recommended within the art house world. Nice!

Polarizing? That seems to me exactly what Sebastián Lelio doesn't do. After all, he does not portray Marina Vidal as a saint. After all, in the hospital she not only runs away from her emotions, but also from her responsibilities. She also processes the death of her lover by plunging into the hollow rhetoric of passion. Not exactly what you call someone who belongs on a pedestal, right?

On the other hand, Vidal wanders the streets of Santiago de Chile like a modern Francis of Assisi. Central to his Catholic experience were the concepts of tolerance, forgiveness and addressing social injustice – exactly what this Mujer Fantástica does, isn't it? She submits, raises the other cheek, challenges with a nonviolent resistance, a humble rebellion. Consequently, you sympathize with her in the hope of recognition, in the form of a remnant of the Orlando she loved: something in a locker that could be her secret, a relic that belongs to her and her alone. When that locker also turns out to be empty, all hope of satisfaction vanishes: Vidal will remain a stranger – to her city, to her in-laws, to herself.

Right, not much happens in this movie. However, "character study" is an apt word. After all, with the rejection of Vidal's identity by the outside world, she herself comes under pressure. Who am I? Who can I be? Who can I be? A mirror, lost in the landscape, shows her. "I am that I am". Or: homo homini deus est... Man as a changeable creature, immutably human. Fantastica!

3.5*

Started promising, but gradually leveled off somewhat, partly due to a few unfortunate choices. Partly due to the stylization, it remains a pleasant film, but there could have been more.
