Fanfan la Tulipe plot

France in the eighteenth century. While wars ravage the country, the young womanizer Fanfan volunteers to join the army of King Louis XV on the advice of the beautiful Adeline. After all, she predicts honor and fame and the hand of Princess Henriette for him. When Fanfan happens to save the princess from a band of highwaymen on his way to Aquitaine, he sees this as a great omen and proof that Adeline's predictions come true.

Fresh and quite funny in places, but unfortunately also too predictable and clichéd in too many moments. Unfortunately, the beautiful Cruz doesn't manage to change that, no matter how beautiful her appearance is... 2.5*

An annoying film that tries a little too hard to be funny. The humor feels more outdated than its age suggests. The opening is still witty, but after that, the film descends into a hysterical pace that destroys all the jokes, even the few that actually work. It's a very busy film, but unfortunately, it results in nothing more than a very fleeting piece. It's always a shame when continuity errors are so obvious. I rarely notice them, but in this film, I saw an error quite often, culminating in Fanfan fighting with two swords in a fight, only to suddenly lose them in the next shot. Apparently, this is so he can pull another move where he pulls two swords from the villains' hands. Finally, the story is incredibly predictable.

Not much to recommend here, unless the bright colours are enough.

1.5*
