Romance, drama and comedy are seamlessly combined in this work by Marcel Pagnol (screenwriter and artistic driving force) and Alexander Korda (as director). The film opens with a fantastic view of Marseille in the early thirties and then zooms in on the streets with picturesque restaurants, shops, bars and the many colourful characters that populate it. Marius strikes me as a high-quality and certainly popular film that derives its charm from the couleur locale, represented by characters that are brilliantly played by top actors Pierre Fresnay, Raimu and Orane Demazis (Pagnol's mistress for many years). It is the kind of film that you can experience as a viewer while grinning, that does not have to rely on exquisite decors, but on thoroughbred actors and a convincing scenario. For such an early sound film, there is still a perfect pace and natural dialogues. Alexander Korda has directed this work by Pagnol excellently, in which beautiful shots are not shunned. Wonderful film.

On the one hand a typical old French film, with people gesticulating wildly in theatrical dialogues. But at the same time also strikingly professional and quite modern, because filmed quite balanced and varied. The setting in Marseille also comes across well and nice to hear the heavy southern accent so clearly, you don't see that often. I also have no idea whether people still speak so similarly in those regions.

Unfortunately, after a promising start, things gradually get worse, especially the storyline doesn't really get enough out of it towards the end.

By the way, there was apparently already some product placement here, note the clear presence of alcohol brands in the dialogues and also in the sets.

Raimu has always charmed me and anyone who loves a thick dose of southern French dialect will find this man to be an excellent ambassador once again.

A romantic drama-comedy with little drama at all, as everything is easily and lightly covered in an "it'll be alright" sauce, despite the many typical discussions.

The first part of this three-pack by Pagnol is certainly enjoyable, although I found the sequel "Fanny" a little fresher.
