Tough film with a lot of endless talking. Pagnol has a good reputation in France with its Provençal village chronicles, but here it all drags on a lot. My perseverance was put to the test. I also didn't think the humor was very high quality, which I would mainly attribute to the age of the film. Nowadays, the cheated on husband is something that is no longer one of the scandals of the day. Building an entire film around that seems very long-winded.

Stage film adaptation of Jean Giono's book of the same name is amusing, but not particularly high-quality. In this showcase for Raimu, the popular French comedian plays the role of the new baker in a small French village who is looking for his much younger wife [Ginette Leclerc). The entire village knows that she is playing around with the local shepherd and mocks the baker who keeps coming up with another excuse for the disappearance of his wife. Only when the baker refuses to bake bread until his wife returns do the villagers decide to join forces and organize a search party.

Raimu is reminiscent of Piet Bambergen and he also knew how to handle this kind of farce. Of course there are more crazy characters walking around, such as the local priest who makes a unique contribution to the search. The story is thin and the humor is a bit old-fashioned, but the enthusiasm of the cast and the excellent work of Raimu provide the necessary compensation.

Marcel Pagnol speaks and he immediately introduces us to a number of characters from a southern village: the teacher, the pastor, the baker and his seductive wife, the marquis, the bigot and a group of colorful villagers, most of them at war with each other. . They don't know why, but it was already the case with their distant ancestors...

The dialogues that emerge are very funny, which will ultimately prove to be the best thing about the film, because although the story is also pleasant and mischievous, and although the pastor is more deeply Christian than ever and the baker is the good-natured naive of the best kind, the level of the film descends as it progresses.

Raimu is, as always, quite in his element, although he is now the anti-hero, in this overall enjoyable oldie, recorded entirely in the film studios of Marseille, although you sometimes have the impression, as already noted above, that it is in nature takes place.
