landmark.

The first real Oshii and the first real (and only real?) adult animated film. Tenshi no Tamago remains a small miracle that convinces both audiovisually and thematically. A true full-blooded arthouse animation that is beautifully developed.

Enjoy the artwork of Amano, enjoy the beautiful soundtrack and in between muse about the egg of the main characters. Not everything may be clear, but with a little background about the problems Oshii struggled with during the making of this film (especially religion) a lot becomes clear.

Unbelievable that this film never found its way to the Western market, because in my opinion one of the most important animated films ever made. Above GitS and Akira.

5.0* and a detailed review

Special and quite nicely animated, but content too abstract to really enjoy it. Somewhere there is still a basic plot that keeps my attention for 45 minutes, after that the ideas come to the fore and I couldn't do much with the film. That wouldn't be a problem if I still experienced the film itself as enjoyable, but the world that is portrayed lacks a sense of credibility too much for that. This is also due to the dark atmosphere and events that portray ideas rather than narrative elements. I'm not going to give it enough for it, in the end I did watch most of it with interest, but unfortunately the film fell further and further away in that area. 3.0*.

Double.

Beautifully animated at times, leaning on the wonderfully crafted post-apocalyptic world. This style suits me much better than the well-known Ghibli films that I discovered not so long ago. The fantasy elements are also really imaginative and create their own atmosphere.

But it is also pretentious. The bombastic soundtrack has a gothic feel and can charm me at times, but it is just as counterproductive as it has to give extra power to weighty scenes.

Films where you can read a whole forum afterwards and come across many different views, usually don't score very well with me. A certain metaphorical content or some abstraction is certainly possible. However, if there are still countless possible interpretations at the end of your film, I think that is too easy a trick as a director to deliver an interesting end product - crisis of faith during the making or not.
