Boychoir plot

"Extraordinary talent needs extraordinary inspiration"

Stet (Garrett Wareing) is an angry 11-year-old boy who can sing like an angel. After his mother is killed in a car accident, Stet ends up in a musical boarding school on the East Coast, a place completely different from the small Texas town he comes from. He soon feels misunderstood, out of place and frustrated and at odds with choir director Carvelle (Dustin Hoffman). When Carvelle discovers something in Stet's voice, he tries to steer him in the right musical direction.

Critical choir leader.

Dustin Hoffman in the cast usually promises something good, but not always. Here he can be admired as the critical leader of a boys' choir in this average feel-good drama about a boy who has to survive without parents. The basic premise sounds like fodder for something big, but unfortunately it isn't. Boychoir is not a bad film, but unfortunately not a good one either. Hoffman seems to be acting completely on autopilot in a film that is as predictable as the seasons.

A positive note is Kathy Bates who manages to make a small impression as headmaster in this otherwise colourless, musical drama. The music is wonderful, even if you are not so fond of the 'genre', although here too there was room for improvement by being a bit more daring and perhaps choosing a different song. But anyway, the problem lies mainly in the lack of originality, the flat Hoffman and the blandly told story that hangs together from clichés. Nothing charming about it.

Average.

“Your clock is ticking kid.”

With a tighter script and some originality this would have been a much better film. Boychoir is solid and routine, with a predictable progression and all the familiar storylines you expect in a feel good film. The choir music is well done, and the acting is also properly. Bates and Hoffman in particular are on a roll, and the young Wareing also knows how to convince. The drama is sometimes dragged in by the hair (the jealous competitor was really too much of a good thing), and especially the role of the father is poorly developed. The ending is fitting for a film about children who eventually lose their singing voices and have to give their lives a different turn.

A beautiful film about a boys' choir, but it could have been more.

The music is beautiful (if you like it), the acting performances are reasonable. The film certainly has beautiful moments. However, I missed the real drama. I also found some scenes somehow not entirely logical. As if too much was cut. The film had potential for 4 stars, but for this reason I still seem to be stuck at 3 stars.

Recommended if you like movies with the theme 'loser with hidden talent becomes totally hot' or if you really like the typical choir music of boys choirs. Otherwise you might want to skip this one. There are better movies in the genre. 3 stars.

Note: I have to mention that I did not watch this film in my own 'home cinema', but on holiday on a smaller screen with poor sound quality. I think this film would be much better appreciated with a nice sound system and on a big screen.
