In the Company of Wolves: An American Journey plot

"How our relationship with animals shaped a nation."

The American West is a globally known myth: it evokes ideas such as freedom, individualism, and unprecedented possibilities. But is this a true representation of what is at play, or is there more to it? Actor Jeff Bridges is the narrator of this documentary about wolves, who serve as fellow travelers on a journey through American history. It explores the connection between the untamed and the domesticated. The documentary also looks ahead and attempts to paint a picture of the identity of the United States in the near future.

Jon Coleman and Anna Kirsch wrote the excellent script for this retrospective on US history through the lens of the wolf. A variety of scientists explain the mythology surrounding wolves based on the treatment of animals in England prior to the colonization of America. This significantly influenced the hostile attitude towards wolves among the colonists. Misunderstandings are cleared up, and the key role of the wolf in the food chain and landscape management in general is clarified. The interviews stand out visually against the nature footage, and Jeff Bridges' commentary is a bit too lyrical in places.
