Everyone Is Lying to You for Money plot

Actor and writer Ben McKenzie dives into the world of cryptocurrency and investigates the promise of financial freedom attached to these digital coins. Alarmed by the aggressive marketing and the growing stories of fraud, he decides to expose the mechanisms behind the crypto market. Through conversations with financial experts, journalists, and victims, he unravels how hype and speculation have led to a shaky financial ecosystem, in which warning signs have been systematically ignored and ordinary investors face significant risks.

Ben McKenzie is known to the general public as Ryan Atwood from The OC, but he is also a graduate economist. On December 14, 2022, he addressed the U.S. Senate regarding the dangers of cryptocurrencies. Almost three years later, he made this documentary, a compelling plea for caution concerning cryptocurrencies. A highlight is an interview with Sam Bankman-Fried, the CEO of crypto platform FTX, who was sentenced on March 28, 2024, to 25 years in prison and a fine of $11 billion. Inevitably one-sided, but convincing in a way reminiscent of Michael Moore.
