The only cinema screening of this film in the Benelux took place at the Liff this year. Because the film is going to Netflix. The new film by the usually convincing Lee Chang-Dong does not reach the enormously high level of the previous two (Burning and Poetry), but it is not far behind either.

Possible Love deals with stalled capitalism, class struggle, and the depiction of reality and its limits and possibilities. As is often the case with Lee Chang-Dong, he takes his time and is not afraid to create a layered film that cannot be fully described in two sentences and can be viewed from many angles. He also takes the time required for this, as always. (Of his seven films, only his debut is under two hours).

It is about a man who lost his job after a strike for better labor rights and connects that to the story of a documentary filmmaker who wants to create a portrait of a number of laid-off employees. But can she really portray the truth, and when does something like that become exploitation? It touches incidentally on many current issues of our time and does so in a way that many other directors should be envious of.

The currently very high average will drop significantly once this film is on Netflix, because this is not lighthearted fare.
