Three sisters and their mother face the threat of poverty following the death of their fabulously wealthy father. A distant aunt [Fiona Shaw] steps in as a matchmaker to ensure the sisters are financially secure. Diana Reid's adaptation of Jane Austen's literary classic lacks the often biting ironic humor and devolves into corny melodrama. Worse still: the episodic script stumbles from incident to incident, often spurred on by someone sharing the latest news with the family. Structured like a soap opera and just as superficial, it pales visually next to Emma Thompson and Ang Lee's masterful 1995 adaptation.

Solid as it is, and therefore also a bit boring. The same flaw as in Ang Lee's version is at play: the beginning moves quite fast and is episodic, which meant I never really got into the film or grew fond of the characters. However, this new version does pick up the right pace after half an hour, and the parts in London and with Mrs. Jennings (an entertaining Shaw) are certainly fine. But otherwise, this is basically just a typical rom-com. It would have been more interesting to set the film in a different period or location.

Visually in a very gray, dull palette, although there are a few beautiful nature shots to be seen. The slim format also stands out, as does the emphasis on vertical lines, which sometimes creates a cool effect that works quite well in the cinema. 2.5*.

An excellent film about three sisters and their mother who have to move after the death of her father. It is not the first film adaptation of Jane Austen's book. Although I am already familiar with the story, this film still managed to draw me in again with the search for love, which is not without obstacles. It all looks beautiful, with wonderful music and excellent acting.
