A first-class documentary about the legendary soul giants, from their humble beginnings in the late 1960s to worldwide fame in the 1970s and beyond. It is wonderful to see how this band's music transcends generations and borders. Naturally, this is largely a portrait of bandleader Maurice White, a complex person who doesn't always come off well, but director Questlove portrays him honestly and with great affection, partly through archival footage and partly through interviews with family and band members. All in all, a beautifully crafted musical document.
