El Ser Querido plot

The renowned director Esteban Martínez is known not only for his work but also for his violent and lavishly celebrated past. The film is too long, and the first half is interesting at best because it offers a glimpse into the film set: it only becomes more interesting after an intense scene in the middle. The film is explicitly 'meta': the director has made a film about a director making a film with his daughter, and the film is thematically about a broken father-daughter relationship that is healed because he eventually truly sees and acknowledges her, and the form mirrors the acting lesson that you have to be more yourself the closer the camera gets, whereas the film or film set within the film films the father and daughter from a distance and the father, as a harsh director, treats her like an object, while the film itself constantly films them from very close up so that we then see the 'true' people. And only by getting close – by removing barriers between us – do we see the pain of the other and can we have a healthy relationship. That is a nice idea, but the film fails to get enough out of it to justify the long running time.

What an ordeal this movie.....

A director making a film about a director making a film..., just about the most uninspiring premise for a film.

Opening scene: talking heads in extreme close-up, unbearable to watch.

Javier Bardem playing a director who looks exactly like ……Javier Bardem…. Not particularly interesting, and I didn't believe a word of the whole father-daughter premise.

Endless rambling, mostly filmed theater… hardly anything happens that is worth projecting onto the big screen. Fortunately, the film within the film is set in the Sahara… which still provides footage worthy of the cinema.

Actually, this film has everything that usually annoys me in the cinema.

And on top of that, this takes no less than 135 minutes!
