The state of Russia has always played an indirect role in Zvyagintsev's earlier films, but in this one, it is much more direct and less in the background. Following his health issues and the invasion of Ukraine, he currently lives in France and has been branded a foreign agent in Russia, meaning he can no longer even return. This film was shot in Latvia. But it is simply set in Putin's Russia.

Zvyagintsev is clearly angry this time and no longer holds merely a somewhat more contemplative view. In Gleb, the entire rotten Russian society comes together. And the brilliance of Zvyagintsev is that, through his characteristic highly detailed style, he manages to humanize everyone, making the film above all a seething portrait of a society that has derailed.

The murder scene and everything that follows is breathtakingly intense. One of the best films of the year and what a welcome return from a very special filmmaker.

What does stand out, by the way, is that in Zvyagintsev's films, families often have sons of roughly the same age (older schoolchildren to young teenagers, so to speak). Nothing wrong with that, but it did catch my eye.
