A modern retelling of a well-known (and much-filmed) Chinese literary classic, Journey to the West, which achieved impressive box office figures. Four insignificant yaos (a piglet, a frog, a weasel, and a monkey) embark on an adventure to achieve immortality. Honestly, I didn't understand everything about this myth because it references Buddhism, but it is handled with plenty of dry humor. The funny characters and sometimes humorous actions keep it entertaining. Ultimately, the message is that you can elevate yourself as a human being by displaying courage and perseverance. It features a distinctive animation style, but the film is sometimes narratively very rushed and nervous.
