The film almost seems to be heading towards a film that revolves entirely around the outlined dilemma: {spoiler] is the sex the gentleman is having with the demented lady against her will, and who can judge that better, the gentleman or the daughter? {/spoiler] That is quite a challenging premise, but fortunately, the film does not do just that. It also shows various approaches to care and offers no ready-made answers. I found the mirroring between the love between grandmother and husband and the granddaughter's first great love sometimes borderline, but ultimately mostly worked well. Binoche holds back a bit and plays very much in service of the film. Courtenay is truly fantastic. More conventional than Hammer's very underrated debut and probably for a much larger audience than that film. But it is nice that he has directed a film again.
