This beautiful film is totally my thing, with Hawke in top form. The well-known Danish actor Lynggaard Tonnesen, known from "The Rain" among others, also has a small role.

And yes, not a whole lot happens; for some, it might be too slow a film, but for me, there shouldn't ever be wild chases or hard action scenes.

Every now and then I really need films like this: a wonderfully grim atmosphere, beautiful scenery, and a host of top actors, with Hawke lifting this film to an even higher level.

And then there is the beautiful nature of the Bavarian Forest; it is supposedly set in Oregon, but like 75 percent of American series and films, this one was not filmed in the US due to lower costs and therefore higher profits.

Our Donald is absolutely not happy about that...

In 1933, war veteran, widower, and father Samuel [Ethan Hawke] ends up in prison following an eviction and a scuffle. His warden [Russell Crowe] offers him a chance for early release: he is allowed to select three men to smuggle a number of gold bars with him before President Roosevelt claims the entire gold reserve. To do so, the men must cover about 75 km on foot through rugged terrain. The group is joined by housekeeper Anna [Julia Jones], who quickly proves her worth. A violent and frequently suspenseful survival thriller featuring an intense performance by Hawke. Unfortunately, most of the supporting characters (including Crowe's) are little more than caricatures.

In many respects, The Weight is an old-fashioned film of the kind you used to see much more often than now. A group of men (and in this case, one woman) must complete a nearly impossible mission with high stakes. It is shot with a keen sense of the setting, and Hawke delivers a fine performance in the lead role. If you have seen a decent number of films from the past, you know that this won't win any originality awards. The film is also not very convincing in developing the other characters alongside Hawke, and the attempts to link the social reality of the Great Depression to the story feel somewhat clumsy. But it is well made, quite suspenseful, and nice to see a film like this again.
