I love the genre, and this is a pure rom-com, with a Christmas feel. It's definitely better than the standard Hallmark fare. I laughed a few times at the funny scenes, and I think the romance is good too.

In the run-up to the holidays, I'm a fan of films about family gatherings in a Christmas atmosphere with embarrassing, hilarious and touching moments, and this one meets those requirements.

I haven't seen Alicia Silverstone in ages. I'm thinking of 1995's Clueless (and a few later films I can't quite name), and yes, like me, she's a few years older. She's no longer playing a teenager, but a mother. But as far as I'm concerned, she's still a good girl.

This is a film for the saccharine fans of the genre, but if you're looking for Christmas atmosphere, humor, and romance, then this is definitely recommended.

And Alicia could use some more casting, as far as I'm concerned. It still stands.

4*

Making a film about a divorcing couple is okay, and there are some decent scenes (when the man starts dating soon after), but otherwise it's a very mediocre film that offers no surprises. Silverstone isn't really an actor either. The girlfriend thought it was a good film, so someone's happy. 1.5 stars.

A simple romantic comedy set in an idyllic, snowy town. It even attempts to incorporate the serious theme of self-realization alongside all the silly song antics. Don't expect a thorough analysis of the theme just yet. A Merry Ex-Mas is, of course, primarily made to provide lighthearted entertainment. The film is a typical romantic comedy in which Christmas plays a prominent role. The intention isn't to deeply analyze and discuss the theme at the expense of the Christmas spirit.

The film offers reasonable entertainment. Here and there, a scene pops up that actually elicits a modest chuckle. The characters are drawn in a flat way, and each one is searching for happiness in their own way. Each character has something that makes them likable. This gives the viewer plenty of opportunities to identify with a character or their behavior.

The film is enjoyable to watch, but it will quickly fade from memory. It's not particularly impressive. Nothing in the film rises above average. It doesn't have any major ambitions in terms of content. However, in the "simple entertainment" category, it doesn't do badly.
