In today's horror world, a traumatic past serves as a fertile pretext for characters to visit dark abysses. In “At The Place of Ghosts,” two brothers are forced to embark on a quest to finally be freed from the traumas of their past.

Director and writer Bretten Hannam takes quite some time before revealing exactly what is going on with both brothers. It is clear, at the very least, that it involves an event from the past. Someone or something that is still targeting the two of them. The horror element remains limited in the execution of this premise. While there are admittedly some creepy moments and a menacing atmosphere prevails, the emphasis in this film is not on the horror.

And that is disappointing, because the titular ghosts combined with the horror label raise the expectation that you are about to watch a classic ghost story. However, Hannam does not tell a ghost story. Or at least, barely. The film is much more of a drama showing how two people are haunted by their past. A drama with horror elements that sends two brothers into inner abysses in order to find emotional redemption. That doesn't sound very original, and fundamentally, the film isn't either, although the ending is surprising.

Visually, it is a beautiful work. When Hannam takes the viewer into the woods where the quest takes place, it is highly enjoyable. Alternately rustic and menacing. A few curious encounters and a single flashback also add a touch of mystery. Ultimately, “At The Place of Ghosts” is not a bloodcurdling film, but an atmospheric drama with some unsettling moments, beautiful imagery, and a suspenseful ending.
