Primate plot

"Something's wrong with Ben."

Lucy returns to her parents' house for the summer, where she's reunited with her father, Adam, her sister, Erin, and their chimpanzee, Ben. When Adam is called away for work, Lucy and some friends organize a pool party. However, a rabid bite puts an end to the party, as the gentle and sweet Ben transforms into a ferocious beast.

I thought the film was mediocre.

Genre director Johannes Roberts continues to evolve after his shaky start, delivering guaranteed quality along the way. Primate is perhaps his most exciting addition. Essentially, everything the premise demands is delivered here: a unique concept, a plethora of characters who occasionally do very illogical things, a steadily building arc of tension, and a polished cinematography. On top of that, the cast performs well, and the screenplay by Roberts and Ernest Riera doesn't make them seem too unsympathetic. Although the silliness is sometimes overly obvious, Primate delivers the exact result many fans of this type of film seek. Roberts' steady ascent is certainly reaching new heights. Extra points for the strong musical selection.
