In January 2019, actor Jussie Smollett claimed to have been the victim of a hate crime that shocked Hollywood, but he was later accused of staging the attack. He was arrested and charged with filing a false police report, but the charges were dropped. In 2020, he was charged again and ultimately convicted of five felonies, including lying to police. In this documentary, the actor tells his story. It also features police officers, lawyers, and other investigators who claim to have discovered new evidence about the case.

Jussie Smollett became a star through his role in Empire. As a Black, gay, Jewish actor, he did not mince words when it came to societal developments and was a role model for many. On the night of January 28–29, 2019, he filed a police report in Chicago alleging that two white men had attacked him and attempted to lynch him. The police concluded it was a false report, which led to a media frenzy and the proverbial downfall of Jussie Smollett. Rehill actually managed to get both Smollett and the leaders of the police investigation on camera in this attempt to uncover the truth. This lends a great deal of credibility to this solidly constructed retrospective, even though the question mark in the title already indicates that not all questions have been answered. Given the consequences for Smollett, that is precisely a good reason to watch this documentary.
