Mexico, 19th century. Frankelda is a gifted writer whose dark stories are ignored and dismissed. Forced to suppress her voice, she refuses to give up, despite the efforts of many to silence her. But when she is pushed into her subconscious, the monsters she has created come to life. Guided by Herneval, a tormented prince trapped between dreams and nightmares, she must restore the balance between fiction and reality before both worlds collapse.

A lack of effective nightmares is a threat to the Horror World. Prince Hernevat [Arturo Mercao Jr.] holds dream writer Procustes [Luis Leonardo Suárez] responsible and sets out to find a better writer. He finds one in Francesca [Mireya Mendoza], who in 1861 dreams of a career as the horror author Frankelda. Procustes feels his honor and position have been tarnished and devises a scheme to sideline Frankelda. The filmmakers gave their horror imagination free rein in this unique, fantastic stop-motion narrative, but they go so overboard with their creativity that, especially in the second part, it becomes too much of a good thing and therefore a bit tiring.
